Musical Genetics

Genetics is “the study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics.” To study the same in a musician or artist, we can look at what has been their training, teachers, their influences from their other teachers as well as several other influences. This page is a genetic account of my musical DNA. Just like I inherit some traits of my maternal and paternal grandparents, in addition to showing resemblance to my uncles, aunts, siblings and cousins, I do likewise in music.

Padmashree Smt. Manik Verma, was the guru of my current guru, Smt. Madhuri Dandage. I accidentally found a very interesting presentation about her. Here it is- 

Ustad Mushtaq Hussain Khan– was the guru of my Guruji, Sh. Ashoke Kumar Dasgupta– who taught me the concept of bani and in particular the shuddh bani.

 Ustad Amir Khan style is the one that impacts mine, like thousands of others’ singing style. I learnt the rudiments of that style and many bandishes and khayals with Amarjeet didi, including some of his original compositions

Beguni kaahe karat ho maan– taught to me by Amarjeet Didi, was a bandish of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and didi told me so. In any case she taught me many bandishes of Ustad Amir Khan saheb, though the one above, in Hamsadhwani was taught by Bindu (Chawla) didi, daughter of Pt. Amarnath. In the youtube video Ghulam Ali Khan sa’ab sings the Bhimpalasi bandish. I also had trained with another of his disciples very briefly- Smt. Manorama Ahuja, in Faridabad.

I also learnt several bandishes composed by Pt. Amarnath-ji taught to me by his senior most disciple- Amarjeet didi, who was my guru and who I was sent to by Smt. Shanti Sharma. Here is a video of Pt. Amarnath. Didi of course also taught me architecture of the merukhand and the patterns of taans to me, which laid the whole foundation of musical notation in my my head. 

Smt. Malabika Kanan was also the guru of my current guru Smt. Madhuri Dandage, who has been my guru nearly from the year 2000, in many avatars.

There are several other gurus who are missing here, but I am not certain they are available on youtube either, so to know about them you could just read whatever I have written about them.
